Primary School STEM Outreach Program at Sek. Keb. Sri Maulana, Pekan, Pahang
On 17th May 2017, 20 of the faculty staffs were involved in “Santai Sains Bersama FKEE”: a STEM outreach program at Sek. Keb. Sri Maulana in Pekan, Pahang. This is an annual program organized by the faculty, aimed to expose primary school students to the fun in learning science. As a public institution of higher learning (IPTA) in Pekan, Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) plays an important role in bringing positive impact to the community in Pekan. In this program, students have hands-on experience doing science experiments to nurture their interest in science and engineering.
Around 120 students were involved in the program, mostly year 5 and year 6 students. Six different booths of different science experiments have been set up for the students to explore. The booths represent different topics in science including electricity, chemistry, and physics. The topics were chosen based on the school curriculum so that the students can relate the activities they did with the theory they learned in class.
The program began with welcoming speech by the headmaster of the school: En. Khalili Mansor, followed by a speech by Dr. Nurul Hazlina Noordin; representing FKEE, UMP. Then, after a short briefing by the program director, Pn. Nor Farizan Zakaria, the students were divided into smaller groups. The students then went to visit each booth to explore the science experiments prepared. Among the experiments are “magnetic car race”, “different density of materials”, “volcano experiment”, “conductivity experiment”, “build your own catapult”, and “air rocket experiment”. Explanation on the science behind of each experiment was given by FKEE staffs before the students began doing the experiments. At the conductivity experiment booth, for example, the students were first exposed to the theory of how different materials have different electrical conductivity. Then they proceeded to investigate the conductivity properties of different materials, using tools and materials provided by FKEE staffs.
At the end of the day, the objectives of the program were achieved. The students enjoyed exploring science through the activities they did and hopefully they learn to love science. Other than that, the program opened a door to possibly further cooperation between UMP and Sek. Keb. Sri Maulana, and the community around UMP generally.
